A very thick and heavy tanto, from the late Edo period.
The tanto is inscribed with the name "presented to Matsuo Katsumasa", which is thought to have been engraved by the swordsmith with the name of the client.
Matsuo Katsumasa was apparently a swordsman from Niigata.
